If you are planning to launch your own handbag brand or create exclusive custom handbags, you may wonder how the whole customization process works in China. Recently, I accompanied a client from Canada to visit local bag manufacturers, as she wanted to launch her very first custom handbag line. Since she was just starting out, her order volume was small, with an MOQ of only 50 pieces. Before our on-site visits, I carefully screened and shortlisted three reliable factories that could meet her low minimum order requirement and handle her custom designs, then booked face-to-face appointments for us. Today I’d like to share our real experience and a complete guide to handbag customization in China.

We visited three professional bag factories one after another, and each of them had distinct advantages and minor drawbacks.

The first factory impressed us with thoughtful hospitality. They prepared fresh fruits in advance for our arrival, and lychees were among the treats. My Canadian client absolutely loves lychees, so she happily enjoyed the fresh fruit right away. It was a warm and pleasant start to our visit. However, when it came to leather selection, this factory had a clear limitation — the range of available leather was quite limited, which might restrict the client’s design ideas in the long run.

The second factory was noticeably larger in scale compared to the other two, and their professionalism stood out from the very beginning. Their team went through every single design detail with us patiently and thoroughly. A big plus here was their quoting process: most bag factories can only confirm the final price after finishing sample making, but this factory was able to provide a clear and formal quotation immediately after all details were finalized. Even so, this option came with higher costs. They charged the highest pattern making fees, and the unit price for each finished handbag was also higher than the other two suppliers.

The third factory offered fantastic customer service as well. The sales team was extremely friendly and energetic, and they ordered coffee and milk tea for us during our discussion. My client really loved their upbeat and positive working attitude. What made this factory stand out the most was its extensive leather collection. They stocked a huge variety of materials and color cards. No matter what kind of fabric or color the client had in mind, the staff could quickly pull out matching samples for her to browse and select freely.

After touring all three facilities, my client decided to request sample bags from each factory. She planned to compare the overall look, craftsmanship and product quality of the finished samples side by side, and finally place the official bulk order with the factory that delivered the best results.

Besides customizing the leather handbags themselves, my client also wanted to add her exclusive custom metal logo plates. This is another common part of bag customization, and it is worth noting for new brand owners. Most manufacturers that produce custom metal logos set an MOQ of 200 pieces or more. If you are new to the industry and working with a tight budget, I would not recommend custom metal logos at the early stage, as it will add extra costs and inventory pressure. It took me quite a while to source a suitable supplier who could accept an MOQ of just 100 pieces for custom metal logos. This hardware manufacturer produces a full range of bag metal accessories with stylish and well-crafted designs. My client was very satisfied with their products and service, and she even decided to purchase all her future bag hardware accessories from this supplier.

To sum up the entire experience, the process to customize handbags in China is straightforward but requires careful comparison and selection. If you want to create your own designed handbags, it is always wise to contact and visit multiple bag factories first. Take time to check their existing product styles, fabric selections, production strength and customer service. Compare samples, prices and service terms comprehensively before signing a formal cooperation agreement.

Whether you are a new startup with small order quantities or an established brand looking for long-term partners, taking these steps will help you find the most suitable manufacturer and make your custom handbag project run smoothly.
